Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grants for Heat Pumps
Government grants of up to £9,000 towards an eligible heat pump, explained plainly. We confirm what your property actually qualifies for before you commit to anything.
How the Boiler Upgrade Scheme works
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government grant for property owners in England and Wales replacing a fossil-fuel heating system with a heat pump. The grant is paid to your installer and passed to you as a discount on your quote, so you never pay the money out and claim it back. One grant is available per property.
Wellington Wallace Renewables provides engineering, surveying, design, commissioning and long-term technical support. Eligible installations are delivered through MCS-certified partners while Wellington Wallace Renewables progresses through its own MCS registration.
MCS-certified delivery partners include Alto Energy, Heat Geek and HPIN.

£9,000 grant for off-gas-grid properties replacing oil or LPG
If your property is off the mains gas grid and you are replacing an oil or LPG heating system, an eligible air-to-water or ground-source heat pump attracts up to £9,000. This higher amount is available from 21 July 2026 until 31 March 2027.
Being off the gas grid is not enough on its own. Properties replacing coal, electric heating, a hybrid system or another fossil fuel fall under the standard £7,500 grant instead.
£7,500 standard heat pump grant
£7,500 is available for eligible air-to-water and ground-source heat-pump installations that do not qualify for the temporary £9,000 uplift. Ground-source includes eligible water-source systems and shared ground loops.
A separate £5,000 grant applies to an eligible biomass boiler in a rural, off-gas-grid property.
£2,500 air-to-air heat pump grant
£2,500 is available for an eligible air-to-air heat pump in a residential property. Air-to-air systems heat and cool the air directly rather than heating water for radiators or underfloor heating, so they sit in their own grant category at a lower value than air-to-water.
Eligibility, exclusions and Scotland
You must own the property. Most new-build properties and social housing are excluded, as are properties that have already received government support for a heat pump or biomass boiler. Biomass additionally requires a rural, off-gas-grid property.

How the grant is claimed
The relevant MCS-certified installer handles the Boiler Upgrade Scheme application and grant claim with Ofgem, subject to the property, technology and installation meeting the scheme requirements.
The installer assesses the installation against the scheme requirements, applies to Ofgem on your behalf, and passes the full grant value to you as an upfront discount on your quote. You do not apply to Ofgem yourself and you do not wait for a reimbursement.
